It’s been six years since Willow Smith’s “Whip My Hair” came out. She was nine years old. The song was a total banger and made us question all those hours spent on Legos and Little Miss Makeup dolls when we were that age. Now 15, Big Willy and Jada P’s youngest is a fierce feminist, a science whiz, and is still experimenting with all things music, fashion and feelings.
Earthlings on Tumblr, Twitter and multitudes of music streaming microcosms have seen Smith develop a more New Age level of consciousness in recent years. Her 2015 mixtape “Interdimensional Tesseract” – which may or may not have been influenced by an A Wrinkle in Time summer reading assignment – dips into a dream pool of exploratory melodies including psychedelic trance, atmospheric pop and smooth R&B beats. Each of the three tracks are expertly concise and Willow's breathy, lilty voice will bewitch you into wanting more.
Her debut album ARDIPITHECUS dropped this past December under Jay-Z's Roc Nation label. When questioned in an NME interview about the album title Willow said, "Ardipithecus Ramidus is the scientific name of the first hominid bones found on earth. I wanted to name my musical compilation after it because, while I was making these songs, I was in such a transitional state. Digging deep in the soil of my heart and finding bits and pieces of my ancient self that tell stories, which end up being the lyrics to the songs."
With the Celtic Tree Zodiac preparing to sprout anew (coincidentally in the cycle of willow), the earth’s energies are currently channeling highly creative, intuitive and intellectual people, so this could totally be your spring transition soundtrack.
For those more in tune with Willow's fashion story, the evolution is just as layered and interesting as her music. From the punky cotton candy-colored buzz cut of yore to her current Urban Outfitter chic style, she is forever on the outskirts of now with one toe tracing shapes in the sands of tomorrow.
Solidifying her place in the upper echelons on young fashion trendsetters, Willow was named by Karl Lagerfeld as Chanel's new brand ambassador in March. This on the heels of brother/soulmate Jayden's recent Louis Vuitton spring 2016 women campaign.
Ugh, they're so cool! Maybe too cool? Hmm, there could be something to all of those alien rumors. I guess we'll never know, though. Daddy'll make sure of that.
